South Beach Car Show

Miami · A1A · 5:47 AM · before the line forms

Donald Hollingsworth shows up first, like always. This morning the woman leaning on Miguel’s truck builds quantum relays for a living. GhostWire Caliente plays low and warm, and there’s a show down on South Beach with something unusual rolling in.

“A car show isn’t about transportation.
It’s about devotion.”

The food truck wasn’t open yet. Then there was the woman.

Donald Hollingsworth had been coming to Miguel’s spot on A1A for three years — always early, because in Miami the good things go to the people who show up first. Not the loudest. Not the richest. The earliest. This morning there was a woman leaning against the truck’s side panel, staring at her phone like it owed her money. Calloused fingers, scuffed boots. Whoever she was, she built things.

“Elena Volkov,” she said. Based up in Oregon — Haystack Rock — passing through, business in Omaha, Kansas City, New York. South Florida a pit stop. She’d just sent herself an email cross-country and beaten it there by forty-five seconds on a quantum-entangled relay. Donald let out a low whistle. “You’re in the NET.”

The speaker in the truck

GhostWire Caliente, low and warm.

Miguel rolled up the window. From a speaker somewhere inside, GhostWire Caliente played low and warm — Hector Vargas’s voice rolling through the static, smooth as honey, talking about the heat, about Miami doing what Miami does. “What station is that?” Elena asked. “GhostWire. Pirate radio. Guy named Hector runs it out of a warehouse in Allapattah. Plays everything, talks about everything, never shuts up.”

Then Donald’s phone buzzed. A show, down on South Beach, starting in an hour — a guy bringing something unusual. “You’re officially coming to this car show.”

South Beach · the show

Not transportation. Devotion.

A car show isn’t about transportation. It’s about devotion — every vehicle a love letter written in metal and paint and engine grease, signed by someone who cared too much about something too impractical and refused to apologize for it. Rusty’s stainless Cyber-rig sat gleaming on the street.

Next to it: a 1979 Dodge W200 Power Wagon, rusted steel poles jutting from the bed, hooks swinging on chains. The license plate flickered — QUANTUM, then UNDEFINED, then a string of equations Elena recognized as the Schrödinger wave function. “NULL,” Donald confirmed. The penguin’s quantum tow truck. The NET keeps tabs on anyone doing interesting things with infrastructure. So does the penguin.
